Digitally controlled recycling of cross-linked polyethylene

Cross-linked polyethylene is a thermoset plastic that conventional batch recycling cannot process. The project develops an adaptive, sensor-monitored process with edge computing and predictive control that breaks the cross-links while preserving polymer quality, turning the waste into certified compounds for uses such as filtration and power cable insulation.

Eureka SMART · Mining and advanced materials

Near-site recycling of end-of-life mining tyres

End-of-life tyres from mining are a large waste stream with low recycling rates and energy-intensive processing. The project combines ultra-high-pressure waterjetting and mechanical downsizing near the mine with cryogenic micronisation and AI-based quality control, producing rubber powder for industrial composites with up to 30% recycled content.

Eureka Celtic-NEXT · Health, data spaces and AI

Common data space for AI-enabled elderly care

The consortium is building a secure, interoperable data space that combines data from sensors, wearables, IoT devices, 5G networks and existing care platforms, so that care providers can develop and run AI applications. Two AI applications, one supporting older people and one assisting nursing staff, will validate the solution.

Eureka ITEA 4 · Electric mobility and AI

AI orchestration platform for electric car-sharing fleets

Electric car-sharing operators manage vehicle relocation, charging and maintenance in separate silos, which raises costs and reduces fleet availability. The project develops an AI orchestration layer with demand forecasting, fairness-aware incentives and privacy-preserving edge intelligence on open e-mobility standards, with pilots in Central Europe and replication studies in South Korea.

Consortium: 10 organisations from 4 countries (Slovenia, Austria, Ireland, South Korea), including a university; coordinated by a Slovenian company

Eurostars · Health, AI and IoT

Privacy-first predictive AI for personalised elderly care

A predictive AI and IoT platform analyses real-time biometric and behavioural data from ultra-low-power sensors and computer vision to detect early signs of falls, cardiovascular problems and cognitive decline. Its interface adapts to each user's changing physical and cognitive abilities.

Status: Funded in 2025 after a successful resubmission

National R&D programme, Slovenia · Critical raw materials

AI-driven pilot line for recycling rare earth magnets

Research organisations and companies are building an integrated pilot line that recovers rare earth elements from end-of-life electronics and upcycles neodymium-iron-boron magnets for e-mobility and green technologies. Machine vision sorts the waste, and digital twins and XR-supported manufacturing help produce high-performance magnets with lower energy use and emissions.

Funding: Nearly €5 million in approved grants
Status: Started in April 2026
